Research Process
Video Purpose: Develop a scientifically and culturally informed exploration into the implementation of Dutch climate adaptation strategies globally.
1. Reading literature on the climate situation in the Netherlands and Jakarta and on the Great Garuda Sea Wall Project in Jakarta.
2. Interviewing Dutch and Indonesian experts involved with Jakarta to learn about sea level rise responses, and to ensure respectful discussions and portrayal of Dutch and Indonesian culture.
3. Developing visual symbolism and cultural representations to communicate the impact of rising sea levels and land subsidence in the Netherlands and Jakarta.
Video Production
Storyboards
Following expert interviews, we developed storyboards based on a script created by the project director, dividing the script into individual sections.

Expert Feedback & Insights
We consulted with the project directors on our storyboards then built out the scenes by creating hand-drawn line work frame-by-frame.
We received feedback on our animatics from field and cultural experts, who emphasized the importance of preserving and respecting national symbols, particularly in Indonesia, and the level of national pride surrounding Dutch water management strategies.
Line Work & Animatics
We worked together to develop overarching visual metaphors and independently developed scenes in assigned video sections into hand-drawn line work animatics.
